At our practice, we take great care to help our patients stay calm and relaxed during their visit with us. We provide sedation dentistry options to help you relieve anxiety during your treatment. Many patients find that even a light level of sedation helps them relax. Please note that all sedatives can impair your ability to drive, so you will need to arrange transportation home after your appointment.
Nitrous oxide provides the lightest level of sedation. It’s ideal for patients who are nervous or would prefer help remaining calm during their treatment. Nitrous is quickly administered via a facial mask, and it wears off quickly after your treatment.
For moderate sedation, we usually prescribe oral anti-anxiety or sedative medication that you can take before your appointment. Oral sedatives reduce anxiety and provide a sedative effect that helps you stay calm. The sedative effect may last beyond your treatment so you will need to arrange transportation home after your appointment.
IV sedation provides a moderate to strong level of sedation that is almost sleep-like. With IV sedation, you will not be aware of your treatment. Please note that IV sedation can cause impairment for up to 24 hours after your appointment, so you will need to arrange for transportation home and for someone to care for you while you recover.
